Many parents are shocked at the sheer gall, inequity and discrimination of adults-only spaces. But many parents welcome the peace, the sophistication, the break. Tonight we’re going out. To celebrate my sister’s birthday. Just the four of us. You see, we found a babysitter. They’re a new-fangled innovation. Can’t wait!

- I like the idea of counting each day as a separate life. Starting anew, celebrating what we have, rather than what we don't. Remembering days that have shaped me, made me who I am. Or just today.

I’ve never quite understood why some folk get so outraged about adults only restaurants or spaces. I mean, if you fancy a night off and have gone to all the bother of arranging a sitter, then you aren’t going to be very happy if someone else’s little darling is screaming through your meal. I think it’s only parents who take their kids EVERYWHERE and assume everyone else should do the same who get upset about the concept.
I also think it might be a cultural thing – more normal in the UK, and presumably NZ, than in some States. A lot of pubs here are child free because of licensing laws, and the ones that do allow kids tend to need them out by 8pm.

it’s becoming more prevalent here because of no smoking laws – especially after a set time.
personally, i view anyone who allows a child to misbehave in a restaurant or other public place where quiet is the expectation to be rude. mine learned quickly that the result of that was to go to the car with a parent, sit in silence, and not eat the yummy meal that was planned. the result of this is that i could take them anywhere and they behave like small adults. if your kid can’t do that, you belong at mcdonalds.
and when we escape, it’s at a European hour that children don’t eat. luxurious that is.

My parents rarely took us anywhere…and if they did, it was usually for breakfast or lunch or veeeerrrry early dinner. I don’t understand anyone who wants to take their child to a dining establishment that is clearly meant for adults with experience palates.
Anyway, have a great time!

I was on a scrapbooking board a few years ago where the (mostly mommies) were having a debate about childfree weddings & when (if ever) it was OK to leave your kid with a babysitter. I was stunned by the number of women who said they would never, under any circumstances, leave their child with a babysitter — not even a family member. If they couldn’t take their kid with them, they weren’t going. End of story.
I babysat regularly as a teenager, & I remember most of the girls (& the occasional guy — novelty!) who babysat me & my sister with fondness. I guess today’s kids have other ways to earn money. (Although when I heard what babysitters these days are charging, part of me couldn’t blame the parents…!! Yikes!!)
Hope you had fun!

i loved when my parents left me with a sitter… it was like a little mini party… we had such fun. a teenage sitter who knows they only have to sustain that level of amazing entertainment for 4 hours before we all pass out from the sheer fun of it all… well it is safe to say, no sane parent woudl try to set that level of fun standard as what we got form our sitters!!! i only hope my parents were having half as much fun as we were.
as for the restaurant — that looks like one I should try out when I am next in welly. way too few eating options with good views of the harbour. for such a striking place as wellington, I am amazed there isn’t more waterfront dinning!!!
