I couldn’t write the last series of posts about why I travel and then sit at home twiddling my thumbs now, could I? The world beckons, there is so much to see, so little time (and money), and I’ve been slacking off the last few years. Malaysia (2009), Australia (2010) and Thailand (2010-11) were repeat visits. They’re needed sometimes – feeling at home in an exotic but familiar environment is one of the great pleasures of travel, and sometimes we just need to rest, relax and rejuvenate.
But now, unlike this time last year, we’re ready for a new adventure. We’re going back in time, visiting battlefields, travelling through the former Ottoman and Byzantine Empires, back to the lands of Helen and Achilles. We’re excited. This trip will see us visit two continents, add four new countries to our map, two totally new types of accommodation, and at least two, possibly three, new modes of transport.
I’ve scheduled the occasional post to pop up, and may even add some as I go if hotel wi-fi and iPads are compatible. Now I need to finish packing. See you soon – or not so soon, in fact.
