The worst part of self-employment – well, apart from the boss, the pay, the lack of sick pay, and in fact the un-employment – is doing my own tax. And so, even when I put it off to the last minute (which is tomorrow), I still procrastinate.
Things I am doing or have already done today or still could do if I get really desperate, instead of doing my tax, include:
- Writing a blog post about procrastinating doing my tax
- Cleaning my desk, filing, and generally tidying my very untidy office
- Message a friend I haven’t seen for over 30 friends
- Ensure I am up to date on Facebook, because that can’t wait!
- Check my frequent flyer points totals in case they’ve grown overnight
- Email my travel agent
- Write an overdue letter to a friend who likes receiving real letters in the mail
- Join a new recipe site and go through a bunch of recipes and save them in my Cookbook
- Watch the pilot of Missing online
- Play Solitaire
- Write some more blog posts about the value of social networking
- Write some other stuff
- Check I’m up to date with blog reading
- Finish the daily Sudoku in the newspaper
- Read the newspaper
- Copy photos onto a disk for a friend
- Make another friend a birthday card
- Continue puzzling over the dilemma of where in the world I should celebrate my birthday
- Plan dinner
- Make dinner
I should do a blog post like this about why I’m not blogging. How often do you have to pay as a self-employed person? I pay quarterly, but it’s estimated, so it’s simply a matter of writing a check for the same amount four times a year (unless something changes drastically in my situation).

I have to pay twice a year, and then in July do the annual filing. The most complicated filings are the twice yearly ones, as the payment (like yours estimated) is easy, but I have to include sales tax, and calculating that is always more complicated. To be honest, filing in July is really easy. I did it online, and it hardly took any time. Once I got around to it.

Twice a year? Ugh. It’s only once a year here, and that’s bad enough! Hope you’re getting around to it now!

It was fortunately done – quite quickly in the end – the morning after I posted this!
(It’s only twice a year because I am self-employed. I could in fact opt to pay monthly to deal with the sales tax. Now that sort of regime would make me miserable!)
