Almost every time I am in London I buy an umbrella. So when we came home, and rain was forecast, I popped my little UK black and white spotted umbrella in my handbag as a safety measure. Sure enough, after a few days, I was to meet my friend at a favourite waterfront bar. I found a park on the waterfront, conveniently close to the bar as it was now raining quite heavily. I got out to pay for and get my parking ticket, under cover of my cute little umbrella. Of course, there was a gust of wind. And of course, my little umbrella, developed for regular London conditions, almost immediately blew inside out. This doesn’t faze any Wellingtonian. We merely pop it back, head it into the wind, and move on, reminding ourselves to use our developed-for-NZ-conditions umbrella next time.
