I am not a great photographer. I would love to learn more about getting the best of my camera, and maybe get a DLSR some day. But ultimately, I am a travel photographer – opportunistic, rarely with the time to wait for the light to be just right, and a sometimes impatient travel partner. So I often have to rely on post-production editing.
I try not to alter the photographs too much, but I want to return them to what I remember seeing. Editing and filters allow me to do that. I have written about this here, and show some examples of how some of my favourite photos have come about. I started experimenting a bit more with photos of flowers that I use for cards, cropping out the backgrounds. There are some photos here. That was time-consuming at first, as I was doing it manually, pixel by pixel. Then I discovered an easier way to do it. I have been using GIMP software for years, and I love it. I’ve learnt a lot, but obviously I am still learning.
Recently, when wanting to add words to a photo, or when I want to put together a collage, I switch between the web services Picmonkey and Canva. My “A Separate Life” header was produced on Picmonkey.
And I have to admit, even good old Microsoft Word has its uses. When printing cards for a friend last year, I discovered the joys of the picture tools, and had a lot of fun playing about with the “artistic effects.” It took photos of flowers or scenes and turned them into something different. What do you think?
They are really really good! Don’t worry so much about photography. When I attended a refresher course last year, I remember the instructor insisting that the only way to get better at it is to keep taking photographs. So don’t ever ever stop. 🙂
PS: I hope you don’t mind if I steal a bit of your time and ask you to fill out this survey. http://ohcarlaloo.com/2015/05/06/got-time-for-a-survey-and-some-20/ It’s for my grad school thesis on travel accommodations, particularly on hostels. I wouldn’t really ask, I know it’s an imposition but I have to gather responses from non-Filipinos and well, I could really use your help. I promise it won’t take more than a couple of minutes. Thank you very much! 🙂

I love them! They’re quite artistic. I especially like the blue shutters with the white flowers, but they’re all quite nice.
