- It’s windy, really windy, spring equinox windy, windy even for Wellington.
- Out of the wind, there is real heat in the sun, even when the temperatures are still cold outside.
- Everywhere I look, I see splashes of yellow from beautiful kowhai trees.
- There is asparagus in my fridge – and on the menu of my favourite brunch place – and basil in a pot on my kitchen benchtop.
- It’s birthday season, and my little sister turned … well, I’m not going to tell you, because I think both of us are still coming to terms with the number.
- Cafes leave their doors open, thinking summer is here, on days when the sun is shining but it is still only 13 degrees outside, and shivering teenage girls are dressed in shorts or spaghetti strap T-shirts, when IT IS STILL ONLY 13 DEGREES OUTSIDE!
- Thursday night was my first pasta and chardonnay night in six months – though I was a rebel, and had pasta and pinot gris, just for a change!
- Cruise ships have returned – the first one over a week ago when it was cold, cloudy, windy, and quite miserable, and another today, when the harbour city is sunny, warmer, and much more welcoming.
How I know it is Spring

The asparagus! So true. Here in QLD it’s the first mangoes that herald spring. Not the ones I buy, but those first expensive boxes.

Spring sounds like a gorgeous time of year in NZ! I think I’m going to steal your “pasta and chardonnay” concept for nights when hubs isn’t home.

I love the thought that as we descend into winter, on the other side of the world you are emerging into spring and can share it with us!

I am jst starting to enjoy the cooler temperatures and crispness of fall, so it’s fun to see you coming out of winter into the (relative) warmth of spring. Flowers and fresh asparagus and spaghetti straps, all good signs of warmth and new growth to come!

I don’t know why but I find it surprising asparagus is a spring vegetable on the other side of the equator as well! Enjoy – sigh – we are now months and months away from that wonderful vegetable.

It’s so funny to always been going into the opposite of you guys. The air is cold in the morning. I’ve switched to soup for dinner.

I love the universality of teenage girls in shorts, regardless of the temperature. Our 15 year old took the dog out a couple days ago (when the temps first started dropping here in NH), wearing shorts, tee-shirt, and a thermal hoodie zipped up to her chin. 😀
Happy Spring!

Hooray for the slow return of spring. It’s always exciting when you see those first changes. We are descending into fall; also exciting, except for the soon to be very short days.
